1. Technology overview
MGA Thermal Pty Ltd is an Australian developer of thermal energy storage, headquartered in Tomago, New South Wales. The company supplies renewable, around-the-clock industrial heat as an alternative to fossil-fuelled heat.
The system stores energy as latent heat in MGA Blocks, in which tiny metal alloy particles are dispersed through a solid matrix and melt as the block absorbs heat. The stored energy is released as process heat or steam of up to about 550 C and over 80 bar, charged from renewable electricity. Target sectors include food and beverage, mineral processing, paper and packaging, chemicals, building materials and oil and gas.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Latent-heat blocks: metal alloy particles in a solid matrix store energy through phase change.
- High-temperature output: process heat up to 550 C and over 80 bar.
- Renewable charging: energy is charged from renewable electricity for round-the-clock supply.
- Digital twin: Toshiba EtaPRO analytics are being applied for predictive monitoring.
- Industrial focus: aimed at food, minerals, paper, chemicals and building materials plants.
3. Potential application
Steam supply for food and beverage plants in Vietnam replacing coal or gas boilers. Process heat for paper and packaging mills. Heat for building-material and chemical plants that run on variable renewable power.
4. Benefits
Supplies 24/7 industrial-grade heat from renewable electricity.
Delivers process heat up to 550 C and over 80 bar, suitable for steam-intensive plants.
Replaces fossil-fuelled boilers and reduces fuel-price exposure.
Blocks remain solid in operation, which simplifies handling.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Industrial heat is a large share of final energy use and is still mostly supplied by fossil fuels. Electrified thermal storage lets plants use cheap renewable power for steam and process heat. Southeast Asian food, paper and chemical manufacturers face similar decarbonisation and fuel-cost pressure.
6. Other information
