1. Technology overview
Plexigrid emerged in July 2020 as a spin-off from the University of Oviedo in Spain and has offices in Spain and Sweden. It builds software for distribution system operators that need to connect more solar, batteries, EV chargers and new loads without relying only on physical reinforcement, so that new connection requests can be processed faster.
Its grid digital twin runs a real-time load flow engine on smart meter and network data and is delivered as three modules: Ari for low-voltage monitoring down to end customers, Tatari for capacity planning and analytics, and Tia, a grid-aware DERMS that forecasts constraints with AI and resolves them through flexibility. Tia can activate utility-owned storage, bilateral agreements, non-firm connections, local flexibility markets, flexible tariffs and dynamic operating envelopes passed to aggregators. Customers include EDP Redes España and Counties Energy in New Zealand.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Ari low-voltage monitoring: visibility down to end customers using smart meter data.
- Tatari capacity planning: simulates and predicts grid behaviour to prioritise investment.
- Tia DERMS: forecasts constraints with AI and activates flexibility to resolve them.
- Real-time digital twin: load flow engine for the distribution network.
- Flexibility channels: storage, bilateral contracts, non-firm connections, local markets and tariffs.
- Dynamic operating envelopes: export limits passed to aggregators controlling rooftop solar.
3. Potential application
Provincial power companies in Vietnam could use smart meter data to locate overloaded low-voltage transformers in areas with dense rooftop solar. Distribution planners could prioritise reinforcement where EV charging demand is growing. Industrial parks with their own distribution grids could manage solar and battery exports with dynamic limits.
4. Benefits
Distribution operators can add hosting capacity without waiting for physical reinforcement, speeding up new connections for solar, EV charging and heat pumps. Low-voltage visibility from smart meters reveals congestion and losses that are invisible in traditional SCADA. Flexibility activation lets operators reduce peaks and improve asset utilisation, as in the Counties Energy pilot. The company holds ISO 27001, 9001, 14001 and 45001 certifications.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Rooftop solar, EVs and new data center loads are congesting low-voltage and medium-voltage networks faster than they can be reinforced, pushing distribution operators toward digital twins and DERMS. Vietnam's large rooftop solar base, ongoing smart meter rollout by power corporations and plans for self-consumption solar make low-voltage visibility and flexibility management increasingly relevant.
6. Other information
Plexigrid was founded in July 2020 as a University of Oviedo spin-off by Alberto Méndez (CEO) and Pablo Arboleya (CTO). It has more than 40 employees and holds ISO 27001, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications. In 2026 it partnered with Corinex on a digital twin offer, joined Spain's ICEX-Next export programme and presented at the EEA2026 conference in Auckland.
