1. Technology overview
PowerCell Sweden AB was founded in 2008 as an industrial spin-out from the Volvo Group and is headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, listed on Nasdaq Stockholm. It develops hydrogen fuel cell stacks and systems that let vessels, vehicles, aircraft and power plants replace diesel with zero-emission electricity.
The system range includes Marine System 225, a compact 225 kW unit scalable to megawatt outputs; PowerSystem 190, which combines PowerCell and Bosch technology in a 190 kW module for gensets and containerised systems; PowerSystem 225 for fuel-flexible power generation; M2Power 250 and M2PowerSystem 250, which reform methanol into hydrogen on demand to replace diesel gensets; and P System 100 with up to 100 kW. A Distributed Master Controller coordinates multiple modules. Target segments are marine, aviation, power generation, data centres, rail, off-road and on-road.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Marine System 225: 225 kW marine fuel cell system scalable to megawatt outputs.
- PowerSystem 190: 190 kW module combining PowerCell and Bosch technology.
- M2Power 250: 250 kW system that reforms methanol into hydrogen on demand.
- P System 100: compact fuel cell system with up to 100 kW output.
- Distributed Master Controller: coordinates several modules and energy integration.
- Engineering services: support for integration in aviation, marine and power projects.
3. Potential application
Vietnamese shipyards building ferries or offshore support vessels could integrate methanol-fuelled fuel cell gensets. Data centre operators could test containerised fuel cell systems for backup power. Port authorities could use fuel cell gensets for shore power or cargo handling equipment.
4. Benefits
Operators can cut emissions and noise by replacing diesel gensets with fuel cell power that is scalable from 100 kW modules to megawatt installations. Methanol-reforming systems avoid the need for onboard hydrogen storage where hydrogen logistics are not yet available. Type approvals from Lloyd's Register and RINA for Marine System 225 simplify vessel classification.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Shipping rules and port emission targets are pushing operators towards hydrogen and methanol, while data centres and remote sites look for clean backup power. In Asia, shipbuilders and ports are preparing for alternative fuels, and Vietnam's 2024 hydrogen strategy lists fuel cells for transport and power among target uses.
6. Other information
Founded in 2008 as an industrial spin-out from the Volvo Group; headquartered in Gothenburg and listed on Nasdaq Stockholm since 2023 under PCELL. Holds ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification. In November 2024 it received an aviation project order worth about EUR 1.15 million from a Japanese company for its HDS300 stack, and in June 2026 a SEK 50 million marine order from LH2 Shipping AS with deliveries by 2028.
