1. Technology overview

Resistomap Oy is a Helsinki, Finland company launched in 2018 by CEO Windi Muziasari and CTO William Nurmi. It uses molecular genetics, data science and AI to monitor antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment, a growing public health risk that conventional water quality tests do not capture. It has analysed 36,350 samples from 62 countries across 470 projects.

The Water Biosecurity Platform integrates AMR surveillance into wastewater treatment plant operations. Clients collect samples with filter kits or composite samplers, or send extracted eDNA, and Resistomap runs high-throughput SmartChip qPCR with a 96-gene routine panel covering resistance genes, pathogens, mobile genetic elements and pollution and source-tracking markers, drawing on over 600 validated assays. Results are delivered in a cloud platform as a Resistance Gene Index, gene removal efficiency and comparative risk scores. Users include water utilities, public health agencies, research institutes, aquaculture, livestock and food safety organisations.

2. Highlighted features & specifications

  • Monitoring design: tailored AMR sampling plans covering site access, existing protocols and system integration.
  • Sampling kits: 0.22 µm PES filter kits, optional automated composite samplers and temperature-controlled transport.
  • SmartChip qPCR: high-throughput quantification with three technical replicates per sample and up to 384 genes per chip.
  • Routine 96-gene panel: resistance genes, pathogens, mobile genetic elements, pollution markers and microbial source tracking markers.
  • Cloud analytics: Antibiotic Resistance Gene Index, AMR gene removal and comparative risk score benchmarked against a global database.
  • Multi-matrix testing: wastewater, sludge, rivers, seawater, soil, manure, food and swab samples.

3. Potential application

Urban drainage and wastewater companies in Vietnam can benchmark how well treatment plants remove resistance genes before discharge to rivers. Shrimp and pangasius farming zones can track resistance and pathogen markers in intake and discharge water. Hospital and pharmaceutical effluent can be screened as point sources for public health agencies.

4. Benefits

Utilities and health agencies get population-level early warning of resistance trends that complements hospital data. Gene removal metrics show how well each treatment step removes resistance genes, guiding process upgrades. Comparative risk scores identify hotspots and pollution sources across sites. Results arrive in about five business days after samples reach the lab, and panels can be customised up to 384 genes per chip.

6. Other information

Resistomap Oy was launched in 2018 in Helsinki, Finland, by Windi Muziasari (CEO) and William Nurmi (CTO). It reports serving over 150 organisations in 41 countries, with logos including CGIAR, NIVA and the James Hutton Institute. The platform is sold by subscription. In April 2026 it was selected for Imagine H2O Asia Cohort 7.
