1. Technology overview
Silicon X is a Penang-based IC design company founded in 2024 and incubated under the Penang Silicon Design @5KM+ initiative. It describes itself as Southeast Asia's first FPGA product company, aiming to offer a regional, cost-efficient alternative in a field dominated by a few large US and Chinese suppliers.
Its proprietary FPGA hardware is designed in-house in Malaysia for performance, energy efficiency and flexibility, and comes with a software tool suite that pairs a proprietary backend with a graphical interface so developers can configure and deploy designs. In November 2025 the company announced successful power-on of its first FPGA chip, with mass production targeted for the first half of 2026; target uses include automotive systems, LED displays, industrial automation, robotics, telecoms and AI acceleration.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Proprietary FPGA: reprogrammable logic chip designed in-house in Malaysia.
- Energy efficiency: architecture tuned for performance per watt and flexibility.
- Design software: tool suite with a proprietary backend and user-friendly GUI.
- Deployment workflow: tools to configure and deploy designs onto the FPGA.
- Industrial and automotive focus: aimed at automotive systems, LED displays and industrial automation.
- AI and data processing: targets AI/ML acceleration and real-time data processing.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese LED display or signage maker can evaluate the FPGA as a controller chip. An industrial automation company in Vietnam can prototype motor control or machine vision logic on the FPGA. University and research labs can use the device and tools for teaching digital design.
4. Benefits
Electronics makers gain a new regional FPGA source, reducing dependence on a small group of global suppliers. The FPGA is positioned as cost-efficient, balancing functionality and performance for mid-range applications. A graphical tool suite lowers the learning curve for developers of different skill levels. Local design in Malaysia allows closer engineering support for Southeast Asian customers.
5. Market trends & opportunities
FPGAs are widely used in industrial control, displays, telecoms and edge AI, yet supply is concentrated in a few companies and exposed to export controls. Governments in Southeast Asia want home-grown chip products, and electronics makers in Vietnam and Malaysia are looking for second sources to make supply chains more resilient.
6. Other information
Founded in 2024 in Penang, Malaysia, as an incubatee of the Penang Silicon Design @5KM+ initiative; leadership team with over 200 years of combined multinational experience. Its FPGA was one of six home-grown chips presented by Malaysia's Ministry of Economy in October 2026.
