1. Technology overview
Sungrow Hydrogen is a subsidiary of Sungrow, the Chinese power electronics group, and is based in the High-tech Industry Development Zone of Hefei, China. It specialises in water electrolysis and supplies flexible green hydrogen production systems for projects powered by variable solar and wind.
The portfolio covers alkaline (ALK) and PEM electrolysers, PWM hydrogen production power supplies (AC/DC rectifiers and DC/DC converters), gas-liquid separation and purification equipment, and the HyBrain intelligent hydrogen management system that coordinates electrolysers with PV inverters and battery storage. The ALK units run from 25% to 110% load with a 5% per second ramp rate and DC consumption that can be below 4.5 kWh per Nm3 of hydrogen. Reference projects range from 200 Nm3/h PEM for a fuel cell vessel to 67,200 Nm3/h ALK for an integrated wind and solar methanol and ammonia project.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- ALK electrolysers: 25% to 110% operating range with 5% per second ramp rate.
- PEM electrolysers: containerised systems such as a 3 MW off-grid unit.
- PWM power supplies: AC/DC rectifiers and DC/DC converters for hydrogen production.
- HyBrain management: coordinates electrolysers with PV inverters and battery storage.
- Separation and purification: gas-liquid separation and hydrogen purification equipment.
- 30 MW test platform: empirical electrolysis platform operated for more than 16,000 hours.
3. Potential application
Solar farm owners in central Vietnam facing curtailment could add electrolysers to turn surplus power into hydrogen. Fertiliser and chemical producers could build green ammonia pilots with integrated ALK systems. Offshore wind developers could plan hydrogen production at coastal hubs using containerised PEM units.
4. Benefits
Wide operating range and fast ramping let electrolysers follow fluctuating solar and wind output, which improves use of renewable power. Buyers can source electrolysers, power supplies, purification and control from one supplier, simplifying integration. Cold start in under 30 minutes and stack management for repeated on/off cycles support off-grid and variable operation.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Large green ammonia and methanol projects are moving to procurement in the Middle East, China and Latin America, and buyers increasingly value electrolysers that can follow variable renewable output. Vietnam's 2024 hydrogen strategy targets green hydrogen production from its solar and offshore wind potential, which will require electrolysis systems integrated with renewable power plants.
6. Other information
Subsidiary of Sungrow, which reports more than 1,000 GW of power electronic converters installed worldwide as of December 2025. Product certifications listed include CE-PED for ALK and PEM electrolysers and TÜV Rheinland for the PWM power supply. In March 2026 it was primary supplier of 160 MW of alkaline units to ACME Group's green ammonia project in Oman. Founding year of the subsidiary is not stated on the website.
