1. Technology overview
SwitchDin is an Australian energy technology company that has worked for more than ten years on connecting distributed energy resources (DER) to the grid. It provides a vendor-agnostic, standards-based platform to connect, control and coordinate rooftop solar, batteries, EV chargers and flexible loads, from a single site up to a whole distribution network.
The Utility Server is a secure communications and control layer that brings DER into a utility's existing control room and ADMS, setting dynamic import and export limits, automating device onboarding and commissioning, and forecasting DER generation and load at feeder and substation level. On site, SwitchDin edge controllers keep working when cloud connectivity is lost, and an energy management solution adds tariff, wholesale and peak-shaving optimisation for commercial sites and VPP participation. Customers include isolated power system operators, distribution utilities, BESS developers and commercial and industrial users.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Control room integration: brings DER data and control into existing ADMS and operational systems.
- Dynamic connection management: sets import and export limits per site to manage feeder constraints.
- Automated onboarding: registers devices and runs commissioning tests before they enter operation.
- Operational forecasting: forecasts DER generation and load at feeder and substation level.
- Edge control: on-site controllers connect assets from any OEM and keep working offline.
- Standards and security: supports CSIP-AUS, IEEE 2030.5, OpenADR and OCPP with PKI-based device authentication.
3. Potential application
Vietnamese power corporations could pilot dynamic export limits on feeders with high rooftop solar penetration. Island grids such as those in Phu Quoc or Con Dao could coordinate solar, batteries and diesel through edge control. Industrial parks could use the energy management solution to combine peak shaving with battery storage.
4. Benefits
Utilities gain live visibility and control of DER without adding a parallel platform; Endeavour Energy gained visibility and control of rooftop solar at 1,200 customer sites through one interface. Dynamic export limits let networks host more solar instead of applying blanket curtailment. The platform reports 99.956% uptime and more than 70 DER manufacturer integrations, and a council customer cut energy costs by up to 91%.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Rooftop solar, batteries and EV chargers are growing faster than distribution networks can be reinforced, pushing utilities toward dynamic operating envelopes and DER management systems. Vietnam's push for self-consumption rooftop solar and battery storage creates the same need for distribution companies to see and control behind-the-meter assets.
6. Other information
SwitchDin Pty Ltd is an Australian company based in Newcastle, New South Wales. In September 2025 it raised a 10 million AUD Series A round taken entirely by Ellerston Capital to scale in Australia and internationally. Partners include the University of Newcastle (grid stability research, 2025), EV-NRG and Industrias Services Group. Customers include Horizon Power and Endeavour Energy.
