1. Technology overview
VFlowTech (VFT) is a Singapore deep-tech company spun off from Nanyang Technological University in 2018 by Dr Avishek Kumar and Dr Arjun Bhattarai. It builds vanadium redox flow battery systems for long-duration storage, addressing the gap left by lithium-ion batteries that usually cover four hours or less and degrade over time.
The product line runs from FlowOne (100 kW / 500 kWh in a 40-foot container) and FlowMax (500 kW / 2-3 MWh stacked containers) to FlowFlex, a site-specific design from 1.5 MW / 7.5 MWh upwards. A patented HeatShield electrolyte allows operation up to 55 degrees Celsius without active cooling, and a cloud energy management platform supports monitoring. Target users are utilities, data centres, ports, mining and oil and gas sites.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- FlowOne: all-in-one 100 kW / 500 kWh container for C&I needs below 2,500 kWh.
- FlowMax: stacked containers of 500 kW / 2-3 MWh with up to 36 kWh per square metre.
- FlowFlex: custom architecture for projects of tens to hundreds of MWh.
- HeatShield electrolyte: stable operation up to 55 degrees Celsius without active cooling.
- Vanadium recovery: patented process to recover vanadium from petcoke cinder.
- Cloud platform: CEMP portal for monitoring registered systems.
3. Potential application
Industrial parks in Vietnam can pair rooftop solar with a FlowMax system to shift output into evening peaks. Data centres can use long-duration flow batteries for resilience without lithium fire risk. Island and remote sites can replace part of diesel generation with solar plus flow storage.
4. Benefits
The company states a lifespan of more than 30 years and over 20,000 cycles with zero capacity fade, so no augmentation is needed. It claims 30% higher throughput energy than lithium-ion BESS, lowering levelised cost of storage. The aqueous electrolyte is non-flammable, and the vanadium can be recovered at end of life.
5. Market trends & opportunities
As solar and wind shares rise, grids and large users need storage lasting longer than four hours, and hot tropical climates penalise lithium-ion cooling loads. Southeast Asian data centres, ports and industrial zones are looking for non-flammable, long-life storage that can sit close to critical assets.
6. Other information
NTU spin-off founded in 2018 in Singapore. Raised USD 20.5 million in 2025 in a round led by Granite Asia. Reports more than 30 deployments across 12 countries, including PowerCube systems on Pulau Ubin and Jurong Island.
